On the evening of March 14, 2018, councilwomen, feminist and human rights activist, Marielle Franco, was assassinated in a drive-by shooting in Rio de Janeiro.

Being a gay woman of color, Marielle was a role model and stood for giving power and expression to women and LGBTQ+ identified people under the current president of Brazil’s conservative administration whose comments sparked increased gender violence and homophobia in the country.

Since her death, a movement of resistance against prejudice and violence has sprung up in Brazil, continuing her legacy.

Women are tackling prejudice and sexism through different outlets: education and art. The Franco Narratives’ goal is to shed light on art activism work and experiences of women artists and students in their own words, their narratives.
